Frequently Asked Questions
Divorce and Family Law Attorney in Westlake Village, CA
Since 1981, I,
Jeffrey S. Graff, have
handled thousands of
family law and divorce cases, ranging from the most straightforward to the most complex. Over the years,
I have noticed that many of my clients share similar concerns regarding
their cases. In an effort to better prepare my clients, I have collected
these commonly asked questions and provided the answers below for your benefit.
Why can't I just file for
divorce on my own?
While you can file for divorce on your own, I highly discourage you from
doing so. Not only is the divorce process emotionally draining, it can
also be very complex, especially when high assets are involved. Having
legal representation can help ensure that your rights and interests will
be protected throughout divorce proceedings.
How is
property divided in divorce cases in California?
In the state of California, the property of married person is considered
as community property, meaning that both spouses have equal ownership.
This includes real estate, vehicles, and even debt. When dividing property,
a judge will divide property equally among both spouses.
My former spouse is moving out of state with our child. What are my rights?
As a parent, you have the right to maintain regular contact or visitation
with your child. The
relocation of a former spouse can obviously threaten that right. Move-away or relocation cases tend
to be very complex and challenging because they generally require new
child custody orders. I can carefully take a look at the details of your
case in order to file a motion on your behalf for new custody orders.
I have a busy work schedule. Do you offer after business hours?
Yes! I can meet with you after hours or during the weekend if you are
unable to meet with me during normal business hours. I understand how
important it is to receive timely legal counsel and I will do everything
possible to accommodate your needs.
Why should I hire your firm to represent me?
I have
more than 30 years of experience in the area of family law. In addition, I am a skilled mediator and Judge
Pro Tem. In other words, when you retain my legal services, you can feel
confident in knowing that your case will be handled by a proven and highly
qualified legal professional. In fact, I won an appellate court case in
Ventura County that changed California family law. As your legal advocate,
I will let nothing stand in my way when working towards the positive end-result
you need to move on with your life.
