Seek Help from Our Westlake Village Family Law Attorney
Domestic violence can take many forms, including emotional abuse. Abusive behavior focuses
on controlling the victim, and can leave lasting scars on victims. If
you are the subject to abuse, it may feel like you have no way to escape
or no action you can take.
Law Offices of Jeffrey S. Graff, I have dedicated over 30 years to protecting and helping the victims
of domestic abuse. California considers domestic abuse to be serious,
and there are protections available to victims. As a Westlake Village
family law attorney, I can help you gain
legal protection, obtain a
divorce, fight for
custody of your children, or take legal action against your abusive partner in court. You deserve
dedicated attention whenever you need it, which is why I am always available
to my clients.
What is Emotional Abuse?
Emotional abuse is a set of behaviors meant to control the victim of the
abuse. These behaviors often target the victim’s own emotions, self-esteem,
independence, and even their mental health. The abuser feels more powerful
and in control when the victim experiences diminished self-worth and identity.
Signs of emotional abuse include:
- Name calling or insults
- Threats and intimidation
- Isolating the victim
- Yelling or swearing
- Humiliating the victim
- Denial of abuse
- Laying blame on the victim
- Ignoring or excluding the victim
- Mental “games,” such as Gaslighting
- Withholding affection
- Shaming the victim
- Refusal to communicate
Often, abuse follows a cycle. The abuser inflicts emotional abuse on the
victim, then feels guilty for their behavior. Rather than accept responsibility,
they may make up excuses for their behavior. They will return to normal
behavior as if the abuse never occurred or try to reassure the victim
that this isn’t normal and try to flatter and charm their way into
the victim’s forgiveness. They cycle will begin over and over again,
until help is sought or the relationship is broken off.
Find Protection from Emotional Abuse
Unfortunately, most abusive relationships never get better, and victims
are forced to leave the relationship to end the abuse. It can be difficult
to escape an
abusive relationship, and if there are children involved, it can be even more of a struggle.
Restraining orders, divorces, and custody battles can require a level
of legal knowledge that many people simply don’t have. A qualified
family law lawyer can help.
At Law Offices of Jeffrey S. Graff, I believe that every person deserves
experienced, dedicated legal representation. If you require help to escape
your abusive relationship, I am here to provide the necessary assistance.
My firm handles complicated divorce cases, restraining order hearings,
and child custody disputes. I understand the special considerations your
case requires when domestic abuse is involved, and I will work to ensure
that you can get the protection you need to move on with your life.
